Giving Tuesday – One Pie = One Step Towards Student Progress

After a plate full of turkey on Thanksgiving and finding big-box deals on Black Friday comes the national day of giving known as Giving Tuesday. Since 2012, Giving Tuesday has been a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world through giving.

On December 3, City Year Philadelphia (CYP) participated in Giving Tuesday by introducing a Pie for Progress campaign. With a goal to raise $6,000 for student progress, CYP fans and followers were presented with a fun incentive: the chance to see up to five staff members voluntarily get pied in the face live on social media. This even included CYP’s Executive Director, Darryl Bundrige, who put his face on the line to get pied should CYP reach its final Giving Tuesday goal of $6,000.

Not to our surprise, the City Year Philadelphia community stepped up and raised over $7,000 for Philadelphia school students, surpassing our goal by over $1,000. Donations allow City Year Philadelphia to partner with schools that are impacted by persistent inequities in our education system to create learning environments where students can build on their strengths and fully engage in learning. As a result, every dollar raised this year has a tangible impact on the Philadelphia community and the students that we serve.
