The power of the yellow jacket
The yellow jacket is a legacy of trust in Sacramento, people move on but the yellow jacket persists, here’s a story from this beginning of this school year that captures the power of the yellow jacket. “On the first day of school, I was helping hand out Middle School schedules. I was walking out to the gate, I saw the sea of students entering, both young and older. Within seconds, a young girl walked up to me with tears in her eyes. She recognized my yellow jacket from her last school year.
She told me her name and we talked about why she was crying. She had many worries for this year — being back, not seeing her friends in the crowd, worries about getting COVID. After a few minutes, we went over to my manager and he helped me convince her that it was okay and when she was ready she went off to class. Later, I was at recess and she saw me and yelled ‘Hi Natalie!’ and ran up to me, hugging me. I asked her how she was feeling and she said she was feeling great and had found her friends. I’m so happy she’s feeling better about school and it felt so great that she immediately knew just from my jacket that I was there to support her!”
