Meet Michael Stevens

Senior Vice President and Executive Director for City Year Washington, D.C.

Michael Stevens

Dr. Michael Stevens is a nonprofit executive with 16 years of experience at the intersection of national service and education. Dr. Stevens started his career in service as a founding AmeriCorps member with City Year, Louisiana. Dr. Stevens also served through AmeriCorps at Habitat for Humanity in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Stevens has since held various leadership roles with City Year across multiple locations nationally. Starting in 2007, some of his positions included Program Manager, Program Director, and Director of School Partnerships. He would later join City Year Jacksonville in 2014 as the Managing Director of Impact for three years. Dr. Stevens also served as the National Student Engagement Services Director at City Year HQ, leading the vision, strategy, and pilot opportunities for Student Engagement services supporting 300+ schools across the network.

A native of Rochester, NY, Dr. Stevens was excited for the opportunity to return to Western New York and launch City Year’s 29th site in Buffalo, NY, and was later named President and Executive Director in 2018. Dr. Stevens’ commitment to education continued outside of work, as he also served on the Board of Trustees for Charter School for Applied Technologies along with the Board of Trustees for Buffalo Commons Charter School. During his 3+ year tenure, Michael was recognized in the Buffalo Business Journal as a 2021 C-Level Executive for Excellence. In the spring of 2022, Dr. Stevens was formally announced as the new Senior Vice President & Executive Director of City Year Washington DC.

Dr. Stevens has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Sociology from Keuka College, a Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership from the University of the District of Columbia, a Master’s in Education from Northeastern University, and recently completed his Ed.D in Executive Leadership at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. His dissertation topic was on the role of social justice philanthropy in K-12 education. Dr. Stevens has been fortunate to participate in several formal leadership programs which include Transformation Leadership Institute, LEAD City Year, The Buffalo Niagara Partnership’s Diversity & Inclusion Executive Exchange Program, and The United Way of Greater Rochester’s African American Leadership Development Program. He shares these insights and career experiences through his podcast “Coaching for Changemakers of Color”.
