Deciding where to serve your City Year

So, you’ve decided you want to apply to City Year. Now comes an important decision—which of our amazing 29 U.S. locations is right for you?
Step 1: you can take a trip and explore each city through our interactive map. This map will give you an overview of what each City Year site has to offer through several features.

Below the map you can arrange sites alphabetically or by where your service might be most needed. Sites can also be sorted through a combination of five filters including: region, corps size, schools served, transportation and cost of living.

Your year with City Year is not only an opportunity to build connections with your students but your team of fellow AmeriCorps members and the surrounding community as well. This interactive map is a great starting point in finding a city based on your needs and interests.

No matter where you choose to serve, City Year AmeriCorps is a valuable experience

Choosing your region

Ready to grab some Midwest barbeque? Kansas City, Missouri has all your BBQ needs! Can’t stand cold weather? Enjoy the southern weather in Little Rock, Arkansas or Jacksonville, Florida. Or explore the perks of big city life on the East or West coast, America’s heartland or the Rocky Mountains.

City Year sites are located across 21 states, plus Washington D.C. Different regions offer different benefits, including climate, terrain and cultural ties. Maybe you have family connections in a new city, or want to stay near where you attended college.

If you’re looking to move to (or stay in!) a particular portion of the country, this view can help you see all the options available to you. Feel free to reach out to one of our recruiters and ask about their favorite spots in their city!

Deciding based on Corps size

City Year sites can consist of cohorts of 25 to over 250 AmeriCorps members. Cohorts are then divided into school teams which typically range from nine to 15 corps members led by an impact manager—school-based City Year staff who help to support and guide AmeriCorps members.

There are opportunities throughout the year to connect with your fellow corps members outside of your school team through learning and development days, affinity group spaces and leadership opportunities like corps council.

Whether you’re looking for a more intimate experience with your site corps or looking to be introduced to a larger community, we offer a range of corps size experiences.

  • Small (25 – 99 corps members)
  • Medium (100 – 200 corps members)
  • Large (200+ corps members)

Schools and age groups served by City Year

Hoping to work with high schoolers? Looking to mentor elementary or middle schoolers? Explore what types of schools our sites currently support. City Year serves grades three through 10, but please note that sites may not partner with every grade level at each school. For example, some teams serving at an elementary school may only serve fourth and fifth grade but not third grade.

Transportation in your new city

Whether you’re going to work or going grocery shopping it’s important to plan how you’ll be navigating your city.

  • Car & Carpool – Car or carpooling is recommended
  • Bus – Public buses are available in this city
  • Public transit – public trains and/or subways are available in this city

Looking to learn more? Some sites have additional transportation benefits, so use these filters to explore more

  • Available – Public transportation is available but corps members must pay for and manage passes independently.
  • Provided – The site offers transportation passes or benefits that can be utilized.

Cost of living during service

The cost of living of a city can be the deciding factor on your budget, extracurricular activities and daily life.

We are dedicated to our AmeriCorps members and are committed to ensuring that service is financially feasible for everyone. We’re excited to announce that we have committed to increasing the first year corps annual stipend to at least $20,000 (pre-tax) in all locations.

Check out our stipend resources for budgeting tips and resources on finding housing.
