Top 4 tips to know before applying to City Year New Orleans
Do you see yourself next year at City Year New Orleans?
New Orleans is known as a city of revelry and festivals–and as a resilient and diverse community. You can be a part of this stimulating and fun-loving city and help its students fulfill their potential!
Be Part of the Solution
Big challenges need the energy and dedication of teams of people–and their brilliant ideas too! As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you’ll be creating solutions all day, every day. How do I help this student get over a fear of fractions? How do I make sure an easily distracted student is able to focus on his work? How do I find enough time to give students the mentoring they deserve? You’ll work with your team to figure it out! You can also funnel your competitive spirit and sense of entrepreneurship into Our Crazy Idea Challenge–a shark tank-style opportunity to win investments for schoolwide initiatives. This year, one of the winning projects was the creation of a library used for reading interventions that reflected the culture and backgrounds of our students!
Join a Great Team
City Year corps members learn to work toward a common goal–closing the gap between schools that have resources and those that don’t–to give students a better shot at fulfilling their potential. That work can’t be done alone. Just like City Year has partner organizations, you have partners too–your team of fellow City Year corps members.
Our AmeriCorps members build great relationships with students, but did you know that they also build awesome relationships with their fellow AmeriCorps members? You can be a part of an incredible team too!
Share What Inspires You
Students look to their City Year corps members for energy and inspiration. So serving in schools in New Orleans is an opportunity to share what gives you strength, energy and power.
For Black History Month, City Year AmeriCorps member Shantel Sayles shared the poem “Hey Black Child” with her kindergarteners. “Seeing students interact with a poem that depicts strength, courage and Black pride has been extraordinary!” #cynola #blackhistorymonth #heyblackchild pic.twitter.com/VhqjWYXRXE
