WELCOME BACK RUBEN!

Although I completed my service with City Year from 2014-2016, it remains one of the most supportive and encouraging networks that I am proud to have. Whether I need an introduction to a hiring manager, a recommendation, or someone to conduct a mock interview, City Year has constantly set me up for success in my career. Employers and colleagues accept my service as a confirmation that I work hard and maintain high professional and personal standards but being able to bring the social skills and an equity lens helps me thrive in any situation.

As I pivoted professionally into the communications sector, Jeff Owens, Paul Willis, Adrianna Lucero among others provided me with invaluable opportunities to build and showcase my skill set, even introducing me to the region’s most respected leaders. Being able to grab coffee or speak with these leaders has led to volunteer and employment opportunities where my passion for equity work and love of my city has deepened.

As I entered my most recent job search amidst COVID-19, the task seemed daunting because of the economic downturn. However, having the City Year family behind and next to me helped give me the confidence to network and apply for jobs. As I picked up short term, contract opportunities, people I met through City Year were my frontline supporters and champions. Recently, I was given the opportunity to return to City Year Sacramento as a Marketing and Communications Associate. In this role, I am grateful and excited to share the impactful work that AmeriCorps members are completing even though service looks much different than it did in 2016 when I left. Once again, I am standing on the shoulders of giants and remaining true to my life’s calling, which is to ensure everyone has access to the resources and services needed to thrive, not just survive.
