Service Projects in the Remote World

As so much of our work and education has now been adapted to the computer screen, we have wanted to ensure that there are still hands-on engagement opportunities for students and our partners. As part of our collaboration with SMUD, we have had the exciting opportunity to bring their project-based lessons into our classrooms. In the 2019-2020 school year, our team at Fern Bacon Middle school was able to launch a day-long pilot on simple circuits with members of the SMUD Community Education team that culminated in students making their own light-up greeting cards. And this year, due to the hard work of the SMUD team and our impact staff, we have been able to expand this program to launch virtually this spring in multiple classrooms at Oak Ridge Elementary.

Our organization not only serves students in the classroom but also collaborates with partners to execute service projects that broaden our impact. These projects range from park cleanups to campus murals and while our ability to gather has been curtailed this year, it has not stopped our partners from stepping up to make difference. Employees at Safe Credit Union and Stantec have completed remote service projects geared toward bringing a bit more joy to remote learning.

To give students and Corps members a spark as they started their year, employees at Safe Credit Union got crafty. They created bookmarks and writing prompt popsicle sticks to help encourage literacy and our City Year members also received notes of encouragement as they entered their new virtual classrooms.

Stantec, a new champion of City Year also generously got involved to support students. In addition to participating in service projects, they also hope to build awareness of STEM careers by creating short videos giving a snapshot of different professions from engineering to architecture for our students to watch.

If your organization is interested in taking part in a remote service project please contact our Development Manager, Joe Matty at jmatty@cityyear.org.
